US lawmakers propose to ban Google and Apple app stores from hosting apps on their platforms, supporting digital yuan as a payment method.
According to Reuters, this initiative was presented by members of Congress from the Republican Party: Senator Tom Cotton (Tom Cotton) from Arkansas, Marco Rubio (Marco Rubio) from Florida State and Michael Brown (Michael Brown) from Indiana. Lawmakers approve, that with the help of the digital yuan, the Chinese government can “spy” on US citizens.
Cotton explained, that the People's Bank of China digital currency (NSC) allows Chinese authorities to monitor all transactions on the network in real time, and it poses a privacy and security risk to Americans.
The bill indicates, that companies, owning app stores, must refuse to host any applications in the US, which allow you to make digital yuan transactions. Many popular Chinese apps, including WeChat and Alipay, plan to allow the use of digital yuan as a payment method, and are now available in the Google and Apple app stores in the US.
The Chinese Embassy in the United States called this bill one of the examples of aggressive and biased actions of the United States towards foreign companies. It accused the American authorities of groundless abuse of government powers.. Nonetheless, the lawmakers' proposal did not come as a surprise, since the US government has long harbored suspicions regarding e-CNY.
Formerly Senator Pat Toomey (Pat Toomey) already expressed concerns, that the use of the digital yuan at the Olympics would threaten US national security, as it can be used to collect information about American citizens. However, former PBOC Governor Zhou Xiaochuan (Zhou Xiaochuan) stated, that e-CNY is intended only for domestic payments.
