European Digital Identity can become a common identification tool for EU citizens – Bits Media

The European Commission proposed to create a blockchain-based information system for digital identification of citizens of the European Union.

The European Commission considers, that the introduction of digital identification will allow citizens and companies of the European Union confirm personal data, will allow you to send or exchange digital documents, and also receive public and private services throughout the EU.

Besides, EU citizens will be able to access various online services, via the Internet or your mobile phones, using a national ID card in digital form.

In accordance with the plans of the European Commission, EU member states will offer individual digital wallets to citizens and companies (European Digital Identity), which will be able to link their national digital identity with verification of other personal data (eg, driver's license, diplomas, registration details or bank account).

The digital identity project fits into the strategy for creating a pan-European blockchain for the provision of public services, which the, in its turn, included in the created European infrastructure of blockchain-based services (EBSI).

The European Commission did not require, that all EU member states use one blockchain technology to implement a European digital identity system. The commission is “technologically neutral” on this issue and has initiated tender procedures to select contractors for its creation.
