FAS proposed limiting electricity consumption by miners – Bits Media

The Federal Antimonopoly Service proposed limiting energy consumption by miners, by setting a special threshold, after which the tariff will be significantly higher.

According to Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the introduction of a special threshold will make it possible to “cut off” household energy consumption from commercial. In this way, ordinary consumers will not be affected, but here are the people, using cheap electricity for their own profit, will pay significantly more for electricity.

At the same time, the feasibility of introducing such a threshold, as well as his level, will have to be determined in the regions, because the average level of consumption can vary significantly across the country.

“The problem of cross-subsidization has become relevant due to the spread of commercial cryptocurrency mining. Abnormal consumption creates an overload of power grids, which were not designed for such power. The problem is especially relevant in the Irkutsk region, Krasnoyarsk Territory and Dagestan, where there is historically cheap electricity for the population", – noted Popular Front expert Pavel Sklyanchuk.

Expected, that initially the threshold will be quite high, but gradually it will be reduced. For now these are only recommendations of the FAS, which have not received government approval. but, if the recommendations are taken into account, then the first differentiated tariffs may appear in Russia in the middle 2023 of the year.

Recall, that in mid-April the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation made a similar proposal.
