Hackers returned 17 Milln OP tokens Optimism Developers – Bits Media

A few days ago, the Optimism developers accidentally handed over to hackers 20 million OP tokens, which were intended for market maker Wintermute. Hackers decided to return most of the funds.

26 May, the Optimism developers sent to the address of the Wintermute smart contract 20 million OP tokens. but, they did this in their own second-level solution, but used the smart contract address on the first level of Ethereum. In this way, tokens “frozen” in the air.

Hackers, who discovered this, managed to launch our own smart contract at this address and gained access to tokens. They sold right away 1 million tokens, and yet 1 million OP were sent to the wallet of Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. Of the remaining 18 they decided to return million tokens to the Optimism developers 17 million.

“Optimism developers can return to creating and expanding the ecosystem. Human, discovered the problem, put on his “white hat” and set a good precedent for the entire cryptocurrency community. And we can now fully focus on providing liquidity for the OP token!», – said a Wintermute representative.

Recall, that at the beginning of the month the Optimism developers began distributing OP tokens to active users and community members. After this, network outages were recorded.
