Tata Power Uses Power Ledger Blockchain To Sell Solar Power – Bits Media

Indian Energy Company Tata Power DDL and India Smart Grid Forum (ISGF) jointly with Power Ledger testing a blockchain-based platform for selling solar energy.

Tata Power DDL serves over 7 million inhabitants of North Delhi. The firm is a joint venture of an Indian energy giant Tata Power and the National Capital Territory of Delhi. ISGF is a think tank, of which many Indian ministries are members, utilities, as well as technology providers and researchers.

The pilot project aims to develop the renewable energy sector and electronic trading resources. At the peer-to-peer site, solar roof owners will be able to sell excess energy to various institutions.

Power Ledger blockchain will ensure transparency of transactions, also within the framework of the project several trading algorithms will be tested. The system implies the creation of an "energy pool" between consumers and producers of electricity. Car charging stations and energy storage systems using rechargeable batteries will be connected to the grid.

ISGF President Reggie Kumar Pillai (Reji Kumar Pillai) reported, that this project will expand the understanding of P2P trading by regulators. The blockchain platform will provide the opportunity for retail customers to buy electricity from any supplier, regardless of its geographic location. Pillai counts, that this project will make fundamental changes in the energy sector of the country.

Power Ledger co-founder and chairman Gemma Green (Jemma Green) said, that energy trading using blockchain will help the country develop the renewable energy sector. The Indian government intends to achieve the level of solar energy development in 100 GW, out of which 40 GW should come from solar panels on rooftops.

Power Ledger previously tested solar energy trading project with Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. IN 2019 Power Ledger partners with Japanese energy companies Sharing Energy and Kansai Electric Power.
