National Directorate for Crypto-Assets and Related Operations of Venezuela (Sunacrip), Police and energy company employees shut down a clandestine data center in the state of Miranda.
National Energy Corporation of Venezuela (CORPOELEC) detected an overload electrical system in Palo Verde, Miranda state. The company notified the cryptocurrency regulator in Venezuela about abnormal electricity consumption in the area of the Palo Verde village.
Based on the application of the energy company and with the involvement of its employees, the General National Directorate for Crypto-Assets and Related Operations of Venezuela (Sunacrip) and local law enforcement
conducted a raid in search of an underground data center. As a result of a joint raid, a mining farm was discovered, which, without registering Sunacrip, conducted illegal cryptocurrency mining.
The underground farm was located in a residential area of the state of Miranda, in which power fluctuations were recorded due to the operation of mining equipment. During the operation, authorities seized 104 Units of equipment.
This is not the first time, when illegal cryptocurrency mining was discovered in the state. During a previous raid, authorities seized 165 miners for BTC mining, in stock, located in the town of Guatire, municipality of Zamora, in the state of Miranda. The confiscated equipment remains at the disposal of Sunacrip. Directorate of Criminal Investigations of the Bolivarian National Police (PNB) mining farms ceased operations after inspections by government agencies, that they will continue to investigate illegal mining activities with a view to identifying other underground data centers in the state.
According to the new legislation, from September 2020 Sunacrip began to tighten control over the mining of cryptocurrencies. The decision was made after, how Venezuela allowed the import of mining equipment into the country, which has been banned since 2018 of the year.
